The Colony Property Taxes
The Colony City Council determines and implements the ad valorem tax rate annually every September during the budget process.
The ad valorem property tax is charged every Oct. 1 for business personal and real property situated in the city, based on the prior Jan. 1 evaluated value. For the fiscal year 22-23, the tax rate is $.645 per $100 valuation.
The Denton Central Appraisal District is responsible for identifying taxable properties, appraising their value, issuing exemptions, and maintaining a record of taxable owners and their addresses in The Colony.
The Colony City Council approved property tax Homestead Exemption
The Colony City Council passed a new homestead exemption on June 6, 2023 that allows eligible homeowners to claim an annual 1-percent or a minimum $5,000 exemption on their property taxes.
This applies only to single-family homeowners who reside in their home in The Colony and not to commercial or rental properties.
The homestead exemption is an addition to the Council’s proposed annual reduction to the city’s property tax rate, with the annual budget determined in August and September.
With a little over $37 million in reduced valuations, homeowners can expect tax savings of $241,448. The Denton County Central Appraisal District (DCAD) will incorporate this amendment into their processes for next year’s property tax assessment if approved before July 1, 2023.
If you have previously applied for homestead exemptions through DCAD, no further action is required to receive this exemption.

The Colony, City Parks
The Colony has around 3,000 acres of park land, of which nearly 2,000 acres are leased from the Corps of Engineers on Lewisville Lake. Residents can choose from 28 parks that provide playgrounds, picnic facilities, and open play areas for their recreational needs.
The Colony boasts an extensive lineup of athletic facilities suitable for competitive purposes.
The Five Star Complex, Turner St. Soccer Complex, and the Little League Complex provide a total of 33 athletic fields.
Stewart Creek Park and Hidden Cove Park, both located on Lewisville Lake, offer water access, camping, and boating opportunities, as well as hosting events like Liberty by the Lake.
Eastvale Park, managed by Blue Sky Sports Center, is one of the region’s best soccer facilities. The Colony also has numerous public-private partnerships that provide services and facilities without adding to the tax burden, such as Blue Sky Sports Center, Stewart Peninsula Golf, Hawaiian Falls Water Park, The Tribute/Old American Golf Club, Lasertag-DFW, and Hidden Cove Park.
Furthermore, The Colony Pawsome Playground offers a dedicated area for dog owners and their furry friends to play.
